In assembly_01, figuration approaches the threshold of abstraction. A pale central field is surrounded and crossed by dense horizontal layers of black, grey and muted colour, leaving only fragments from which the presence of a face can be reconstructed.
Recognition develops slowly. No single contour defines the figure; instead, separate marks, tonal shifts and interruptions begin to align into the suggestion of eyes, a central axis and the boundaries of a head. The image therefore depends as much on the act of looking as on what has been explicitly painted.
Within the assembly group, assembly_01 pushes provisional construction toward its limit. Where assembly_00 gathers visibly distinct fragments into a face, this work allows the components to remain almost autonomous. The figure emerges only temporarily from their alignment, always close to dissolving back into surface.
